Council Seeks To Close Access To Iconic Wairarapa Surf Coastline

South Wairarapa District Council is proposing a bylaw that would ban all public access – even on foot – to a public road leading to one of the most remote and spectacular coastlines in New Zealand. The Wairarapa Coastline in question is a real jewel in the New Zealand surf coast crown.

Wellington-based photographer and filmmaker Andy MacDonald has jumped into the mooted Matakitakiakupe (Cape Palliser) closure issue. He has produced a film that unpacks the South Wairarapa District Council’s proposal, the implications of it, and why he believes this is a national issue, not just a local one.

Andy also shares his recent exchange with the council about another blocked public road and reveals why he thinks there’s a pattern emerging. “This isn’t just about Cape Palliser – it’s about protecting long-standing public rights before they’re quietly erased,” Andy offers.

Please take action and submit your feedback before August 19, 2025.

Submit before August 19 to have your say on this proposal before it becomes a bylaw.
