Luke Griffin sits down to discuss growing up in the Mount, working with his older brother and shaper Jordan Griffin, and experiencing a Dunedin winter.
Luke is one of those surfers who is unfairly gifted. He has equal parts raw talent and great style on top of a board. I was fortunate enough to have lived with him and his family for several months in 2019 where I got to witness this perfect blend firsthand.
Hailing from Mount Maunganui in Tauranga, Luke originally planned to make the trek down to Dunedin’s cold shores at the start of July to celebrate Re-Orientation week, aptly dubbed REO week. However, I was able to convince him to come down a week earlier to come with us on a trip right down to the bottom of the South Island.
It was testament to his character to see how quickly Luke integrated himself into the group of southern chargers and how he adapted to the ever-changing southern conditions – especially knowing that the Griffin family is notorious for avoiding cold water at all costs.
After our trip and REO week had all wrapped up we were able to sit down with Luke and have a chat about everything from childhood memories to his least favourite part of southern exploration.
